LA SCALA THEATRE

The La Scala Theatre, inaugurated in 1778 and designed by Giuseppe Piermarini, is one of the most important opera houses in the world. Behind its majestic façade lies a horseshoe-shaped auditorium with four tiers of boxes and two galleries, accommodating just over two thousand spectators: a place created to bring together aristocracy, bourgeoisie, and ordinary citizens in the shared experience of melodrama.

For Giuseppe Verdi, Milan and La Scala were decisive milestones. Here, some of his most powerful operas had their world premieres, including Nabucco, I Lombardi alla prima crociata, Giovanna d’Arco, Don Carlo, Otello, and Falstaff. These masterpieces elevated him from a composer rooted in Parma to an undisputed leading figure on the Italian and international stage.

The La Scala Theatre is not just a performance venue, but also a symbol of technological, social, and cultural transformation. Here, Maestro Verdi faced the pressures of success: the audience, expectations, tradition, financial challenges, and at the same time the urgency to experiment and to give form to his dramatic vision.

Visiting La Scala Theatre, stepping into its foyer, climbing to the boxes, and sensing the echo of its vaulted ceilings, means entering a place that has witnessed not only the birth of masterpieces, but also doubts, conflicts, and moments in which Verdi had to choose between what was expected of him and what he felt compelled to express.

The theater is open from Monday to Saturday (1:00 pm – 6:00 pm)
Exclusively for same-day performances, the box office is also open on Sundays, from two hours before until after the start of the show.
