ORATORY OF THE HOLY TRINITY

Municipality: Busseto (PR) - Theme: Religion

Next to the Collegiate Church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, in the heart of Busseto, stands the Oratory of the Holy Trinity, a small treasure chest of art and devotion, forever linked to an intimate moment in Giuseppe Verdi’s life. Here, on May 4th, 1836, the young composer married Margherita Barezzi, his first wife and daughter of his patron, Antonio Barezzi.

Built between the 14th and 15th centuries and originally dedicated to Blessed Rolando de’ Medici, the oratory was later entrusted to the Confraternity of the Holy Trinity, from which it takes its current name. Between 1766 and 1770, the interior was completely renovated in Rococò style, acquiring the graceful elegance that still characterizes it today.

Inside, visitors can admire refined 18th-century stuccoes and a splendid high altar in polychrome marble, completed in 1749. On the back of the altar, a bas-relief depicts Blessed Rolando with his coat of arms. The intricately carved entrance door, dated 1794, is attributed to Francesco Galli. The oratory’s artistic centerpiece is the altarpiece in the apse, painted in 1579 by Vincenzo Campi, a master of late Renaissance painting in Lombardy. It features the Holy Trinity with Saints Apollonia and Lucy, rendered with extraordinary delicacy.
