ARTURO TOSCANINI BIRTHPLACE MUSEUM
Municipality: Parma (PR) - Theme: HistoryThe Arturo Toscanini Birthplace Museum, located in the characteristic Oltretorrente district of Parma, is the house where the famous conductor was born on March 25, 1867. The building, dating back to the 18th century, was acquired by the Maestro’s children and donated to the Municipality in 1967, on the centenary of his birth. After extensive structural and museum restoration, it was reopened in 2007, preserving the atmosphere of Toscanini’s childhood home.
Inside, the museum offers a thematic itinerary divided into several rooms, each dedicated to an aspect of Toscanini’s life and legend: Entrance, Corridor, Birth Room, The Maestro, Small Kitchen, Piano Room, and Audio-Video Room. The modern display combines historical documents and personal objects with multimedia installations that help visitors understand not only his artistic triumphs but also his passionate character and civic commitment.
Among the exhibits are photographs, letters, posters, period furniture, clothing, musical instruments, and autograph documents, mainly from his residences in Milan and Riverdale, United States. A highlight is the Bechstein piano that belonged to tenor Aureliano Pertile, a dear friend of Toscanini.
The museum, managed by the Municipality of Parma with the support of the Casa della Musica, is fully accessible, with an elevator for visitors with mobility impairments and adapted restrooms. A guided tour service is also available, particularly designed for schools, with the possibility of educational activities.
The Museum is open from Wednesday to Friday (10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.) and on Saturday and Sunday (10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.)
To allow a complete visit, entry is permitted up to half an hour before closing.
