NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF VERDI STUDIES
Municipality: Parma (PR) - Theme: HistoryFounded in Parma in 1959 on the initiative of musicologist Mario Medici, the National Institute of Verdi Studies (INSV) was recognized by UNESCO on February 25, 1960, and since then has represented a key reference point for the study, preservation, and promotion of Giuseppe Verdi’s life and works.
The Institute is housed in Palazzo Cusani (Casa della Musica), located in Piazzale San Francesco 1. Its core facilities include one of the world’s most important libraries in the Verdian field, with over 16,000 volumes, a historic disc library with about 3,300 recordings (78, 45, and 33 rpm) dedicated to Verdi’s repertoire, a correspondence archive with more than 28,000 letters, a visual archive of stage designs, as well as iconographic and phonographic collections.
The Institute promotes a broad academic program that includes the publication of books and journals, the national edition of Verdi’s correspondence, the organization of conferences, university courses, study meetings, thematic exhibitions, auditions, and workshops, along with the management of the Rotary Club of Parma “Giuseppe Verdi” International Prize. In recent years, a bilingual (Italian/English) website has also been launched, offering rich digital content: online archives, educational videos, a monthly newsletter, a catalog of publications, and sections dedicated to multimedia projects.
