CASA DELLA MUSICA AND CASA DEL SUONO
Municipality: Parma (PR) - Theme: MusicThe Casa della Musica (House of Music) is housed in the fifteenth-century Palazzo Cusani, in the heart of Parma, and was inaugurated in 2002 as a center for musical documentation, research, and dissemination. In addition to preserving a valuable archival heritage, including the Historical Archive of the Teatro Regio and the library-media center (with books, journals, recordings, and multimedia materials), it hosts prestigious institutions such as the National Institute of Verdi Studies and the Institute for Musical Heritage in Emilia-Romagna. The venue is also a hub for cultural production: it hosts conferences, exhibitions, festivals, and concert series. The Concert Hall, with 178 seats, regularly presents chamber and piano performances, while the Auditorium is used for screenings, lectures, and multimedia events. It is therefore a vibrant place that bridges historical memory with contemporary music, making Giuseppe Verdi’s legacy, so central to Parma’s cultural identity, tangible. It is no coincidence that collateral events of the Festival Verdi are held here, bringing together research and performance.
A short distance away stands the Casa del Suono (House of Sound), inaugurated in 2007 inside the former church of Santa Elisabetta and created as a permanent laboratory in collaboration with the University of Parma, its goal is to combine scientific outreach with technological experimentation. This museum traces the history and evolution of sound reproduction through a collection of about 400 historic devices: from Edison’s phonographs to gramophones, from early radios to more recent CDs. The spaces, designed as interactive installations, allow visitors not only to observe the devices but also to immerse themselves in the acoustic experience each of them produced.
These two venues, though different in their mission, form a complementary itinerary: the Casa della Musica preserves and promotes tradition, with special focus on the Verdian repertoire, while the Casa del Suono explores how the way we experience music has been transformed into the age of technology.
