All opera lovers often argue among themselves about which is the most beautiful opera that Verdi wrote: it is really impossible to say, as there might be works which can be more advisable than others, but none of them can be defined as the absolute best.
Each person can prefer one specific opera, which will surely be different from the opera preferred by somebody else.
However, Verdi had no doubt: he actually made explicit which is “my most beautiful work.”
We’re talking about the musicians retirement home built by Verdi in Milan, which is intended to accommodate older musicians who find themselves alone and in need.
In order to sustain this charity, Verdi devolved to it the copyrights, in Italy and in the world, of all his works.
The musicians retirement home “Giuseppe Verdi” is still up and running, and is located in Piazza Michelangelo Buonarroti in Milan. Verdi asked to be buried, together with his wife Giuseppina Strepponi, in the crypt of its chapel, which all Verdi’s lover can visit to pay tribute.
The house also stored the spinet with which Verdi learned to play music, and that was repaired free of charge by the piano tuner, who was impressed by young Verdi’s excellent attitude to play music (this fact is proved by a note left inside the instrument).
